T3 Blog Promt #1 10-min. Writing
Over the weekends, New York became the 6th state in the US to legalize same-sex marriage. I think that the chances of same-sex marriage every becoming legal in Singapore are low. This is due to the strong stand of the government and other organizational groups against it. The Singapore government has a stand that bans homosexuality in Singapore, which is unlikely to change. According to the Section 377A of the Penal Code, any male who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years. This show that being gay in Singapore and performing homosexual acts is against the law, this reflects the strong stand by the Singapore government to prevent homosexuality in Singapore. However, the Government has announced several times that the section will not be enforced in the case of consensual homosexual sex in private. Sex between women has never been criminalized. This shows that the government does not allow people to legally married a person of the same sex. But the government also closes one eye if people of the same sex "married" and life together. From this , I can infer that Singapore's government's stand is slowly wavering and there might be a day where they would totally change their point of view and recognize same-sex marriage. The world is slowly but surely accepting the fact that there are same-sex marriage and so will Singapore in time to come. Thus in conclusion, i feel that Singapore's government will legalize same-sex marriage in a matter of time.
