Book review of the Umbrella Man from the Ten Short Stories by Roald Dahl

The writer is a 12 years old girl and her mother is 34 years old. They went to London for a dentist appointment. They went to a cafe right after the dentist appointment. When they came out of the cafe,it started to rain. Just then, a men in his seventies came up to them and offered to sell a 20pound silk umbrella for only a pound. He claims that he needed that money for the taxi fare as he left his wallet at home. After they bought the umbrella, they decided to follow the old man. They realised that the old man stole umbrellas from bars, sell them to people and than go to another different bar for a drink of whiskey before repeating it over again. I feel that this old man is very smart and sharp to think of such a trick without getting caught. One day, he would be left with no more bars to go and would be broke.

" Sound " Poem

I heard the owls hooting in the dark
I heard the sheep bleating beyond the hill
I heard the wolves howling in the mountain
I heard the sparrows chipping on the trees.

I heard the dogs barking in the house
I heard the horses galloping pass the forest
I heard the bulls bellowing in the farm.
I heard the bees buzzing in the garden

I heard the frogs croaking in the pond
I heard the mice squeaking in the corner of the house
I heard the roosters crowing at the backyard.
I heard the turkeys gobbled in the shed

I heard the pigeons coo in the darkness
I heard the ducks quack on the pond
I heard the pigs grunt in the barn
I heard the cats meow on the streets

Poetry about life in Primary to Secondary school

In Primary school,
We never did homework,
wasn't even stressful,
and lessons were meaningful

Never had to listen,
We could just chat.
Teachers don't care
We also didn't care

Break time was soccer,
and nothing else.
No food all play,
was our class motto.

Now in Secondary school,
everything tom ba lek.

Form teacher very fierce,
C plus plus confuses my mind,
Literature, what is that?
Oh my god, construction!

No soccer says Mr Balan,
Return must have "0" says Koh Kim Tian.
Iron become element Fe
Why is gold Au??

Sec school very stress,
Everything from A to Z.
ABC , SEE and PEEL,
Why all use acronyms?(not the mousehunt trap)

Sec school scam us.
they say 6 subjects,
but there is more.

Humanities is History and Geography,
Out of nowhere came a Projects Day.
LA splits to English and Literature.
Why become 9 subjects??

Things i have learnt for Language Arts this term.

I realised that poetry was not as simple as i thought it was. This year, I improved my comprehension skills and my grammar. My grammar was not very good in primary six where i always got mistakes in my tenses. Now, I seldom get my tenses wrong. I also understood literature. In Primary school, i thought it was only the reading of a storybook. But it is not so simple. You have to analyse the main points and remember the key points of the book to score. I hope I can improve my composition and my unseen poetry

Metaphor Poem

Guang-an speaks as loud as a thunder,
As fast as lightning.
So muffled was his sound that
we could not understand him

Todays trip to 新加坡佛牙寺

Today, I went to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (Singapore). My mother and Aunt 'donated' a lamp in the scared room which stores the Buddha Tooth. I had to go through a boring 1-2 hours of chanting session just a glass panel away from the very scared room . I kept quiet and just followed what the others were doing. It was boring but worthwhile. We went through a ceremony (i don't really know the significance of it). After that, we were lead to the scared room after a security check just like the kind in a airport. The monk describe every corner of the room from the material to the purpose of the object. The statue of the Buddha and the chamber which stores the Buddha's Tooth is made of pure gold. It was a eye-opener for me !!
Even the tiles were made of gold. It must have cost a bomb to built the whole 3 story high temple . Hope i would have a chance to enter that room again in the future.

Some poems

Haiku

Stubborn Kean Murphy
Trying to act cool and hot
on a one-legged chair.
Bang!He had a ba-la-ku
And he wasnt cool anymore

Tanka

Proud Patrick Murphy
sat on the chair with one leg
thought he won't fall down
Suddenly he fall backwards
and his face turned beet red

one plus one is two
two plus two is one plus three
two and three makes five
Why one times one equals one?
Course two times two equals four!

Cinquain

Murphy!
You will fall down!
If you sit on one leg
Kean fall down right after and we
laugh loud!

My Limerick

Where did that boy come from?
Why doesn't he have the consent form?
If you want to save him from our teacher Ms Taibary,
Go photocopy a piece of that at the Libary!

Book review of the graveyard book

The story is about a small baby who's family was murdered by a man. He came to the graveyard near his house by accident. He grew up there and learnt skills like becoming invisible and to walk inside people's dreams. A group of people known as the jacks of all jacks plotted to kill his whole family. He was protected by the graveyard forks and named nobody owens.....
In my opinion, this book is a very good book. It is descriptive and magical. It is one of the best books that I read in my life.

Poem (LA e-learning)

From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory;
But thou contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament,
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content,
And tender churl mak'st waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be:
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

Q1.
The figurative language used is a hyperbole. It is used to express the feelings and words in the poem such that it gives an impression that gives the reader a more better understanding of the whole poem idea. Metaphors are used to describe actions or things in the poem such that it would be better to understand. Lastly is Symbolism, which is to mix two things in the story that adds up nicely in the poem to give a more intense story.

Q2.
I dont really know any poems so I randomly search for William Shakespeare and choose one of his poems. I found this poem interesting at first because the name was Sonnet 1. Which i thought was his first poem. When I read it again and again, the poem became to make more sense to be. It is like a story but with rhyme. Even thought some of the words seem foreign to me, I can make a little sense out of it .

Intrapersonal

Why am I cursed to have a drunkard as my father?? Everyday, he spents away lots of our hard-earned money away like water just to buy toddy. Just because of that, my elder sister and I cannot even go to school! We have to work very hard to earn just enough money for my two younger sisters school fees and for food.
I want to go to the city where I can earn more money and escape from my father. Yesterday was the day where enough was enough! The next door idiot came and killed our dog pinto because my father owed him money. The heartless idiot!!
I will get a job from the de Silvas. Mr de Silva said that he would give me a job as a car-cleaner if I go to bombay. I will earn lots and lots of money and escape from poverty.
Bye
Hari

YES! I love talking about food. I will continue posting more topics on food in the weeks to come.

Chapati tends to be thin and papery while roti plata is soft and pliable. The roti plata originates in Punjabi while the chapati originates in East Africa.
Jalebi is a fried sweet dipped in sugar, while You Tiao is a long deep-fried dough, without any sugar content.

Here is a simple recipe to make 8 Chapati :
- 2 cups Wheat Flour, 1 tsp Ghee, 1 tsp Salt, Water to knead dough

The steps are :
1. Mix ghee, salt, wheat flour and adequate amount of water to knead smooth dough.
2. Leave it for an hour.
3. Make equal sized balls, smear them with dry flour and roll them out on a rolling board.
4. Heat a griddle. Put the chapati on it.
5. Moderately roast both the sides of chapati on griddle.

Here is the recipe for Jalebi, with the ingredients consisting of 2 cups All Purpose Flour, 1-1/2 tbsp Rice flour, 1/4th tsp Baking powder, 2 tbsp Curd, 3 cups Sugar, 2-1/2 cups Water, 1/2 tsp powdered Cardamon, Ghee or Vegetable oil.

The steps are :
1. Mix the flour, rice flour, baking powder, curd in a bowl.
2. Mix well, add water and whisk until smooth.
3. Set aside for about 2 hours to ferment.
4. Whisk thoroughly before use.
5. Prepare sugar syrup. Add cardamon powder
6. Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan or kadhai.
7. Pour the batter in a steady stream into the kadhai to form coils. Make 4-5 at a time.
8. Deep fry them until they are golden and crisp all over but not brown.
9. Remove from the kadhai and drain on kitchen paper and immerse in the sugar syrup.
10. Leave for at least 4-5 minutes so that they soak the syrup and serve hot.

I feel hungry now :p

A book i read today

I read Charlotte's Web for the 3rd time yesterday. I was feeling rather bored so i randomly picked a book to read. The morale of the story is if you are determine to do something, you can do it. The spider was determine to save the pig and wrote words on the web which is a very tough job. But because she was determine to save the pig, she still did it despite not knowing how to write words and it was only her first time doing it. In the end, she succeeded in saving the pig from being slaughtered during Christmas.

The reason why i wrote this ending.

I didnt want the man to die and i also didnt want the kind-hearted princess to suffer.
So i thought up a ending that would let the man survive and also get together with the princess making it a very happy ending.

e-learning post

I choose the musical learning task option a.

I found a piece of music which is suitable for the opening scene of Lamb To The Slaughter.
The music is none other than .........Linkin Park- In The End- Soothing, Relaxing Music

Its an instrumental version of Linkin Park's "In The End". It is a peaceful, relaxing and happy piece of music just like the scenario at the start of the play. When mary maloney's husband entered the house, it seemed like a perfectly normal day and she had good news that the baby was going to be a boy.

THE LADY, OR THE TIGER?

He turned, and with a firm and rapid step he walked across then empty space. Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovably upon that man. The man walked towards the door on the right and stopped. Just as he was about to turn the doorknob, he hesitated. He knew that the princess loved him very much but could it override her jealousy? The young man took a deep breath and opened the door. The man opened his eyes but nothing came out. He took a look back at the princess and saw her dazed and confused. Just than, the king stood up and said,"You have proofed your innocence. I shall let you marry my daughter on the account that she love you so much. With that, he left. Tears of joy ran down both the man and the princess faces as the man ran up to hug the princess.

Lamb to the Slaughter

My idiot husband,Patrick, deserves to die. Who asked him to abandon me. No.. not just me, he didn't even want our unborn boy. I had always been a loving and caring wife, trying to please him in whatever ways I can. Never had I raised my voice or scold him. He was too much this time. Wanting to leave us to persuit his new found love! It was better for him to be dead than alive.
I was so anxious during the whole time the police was in the house! I heaved a sigh of relieve when the police ate the lamb and I could'nt believe that I had outsmarted the police!!! They were tricked by me and they ate the only piece of evidence, the cooked Lamb leg. They were a bunch of fools. Just like what they said, the weapon was right under their very noses.hahahaa.....
Goodbye dear diary.
